Ferns are mostly a tropical group, and New Zealand has high number of species. We have about 200 species, ranging from 10 m high tree ferns.

What do ferns eat?
The fiddleheads of certain ferns are eaten as a cooked leaf vegetable. The most popular of these are  Western swordfern, Polystichum munitum, king of northwest ferns.

What colour are they?

Fern green is a colour that resembles ferns. A Crayola crayon named fern was created in 1998. The first recorded use of fern green as a colour name in English was in 1902.

What is a fern?

A fern is one of the most important NZ plants. The fern is a design that is used in Maori art a lot and is very important to the culture.

Where is a fern found?
The fern is found a lot of different areas. Tree ferns are found growing in tropical and subtropical areas, as well as rainforests in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and other island groups nearby.
